This week we have Brent “BReal” Robinson on It’s Always Funny in Salt Lake City. Brent is a relatively new comic taking the scene by storm. He hosts, feature, headlines All kinds of events. His stage persona is high energy and will bring crowds to their feet. When I was told that he had only been doing comedy for less than a year… I was shocked. He commands a comedy room like a seasoned pro. “BReal” has in the short time done things that have taken others years to do. Hosting an event at the U92 Summer Jam and going on the road to Las Vegas are prime examples of this.
We talk to him about breakfast, how to succeed and his thoughts on the local comedy scene.

If you could compare yourself to a breakfast menu item, what would it be and why?
i would have to say eggs, u can do so much with eggs and you just never no what egg i may be that day, all scrambled up and ready to go, or just kicken back over easy, or ready for a ruff crowd hard bowled, or some days i just want to say kiss my sunny side up!!! so ya defiantly eggs
Who would win in a fight between Jasmine from Aladdin, Thumper from Bambi and Mat Hatter from Alice in Wonderland? What would be the their signature move sealing their victory?
Jasmine, no doubt. First off she would be much to sweet to Bambi and gain her trust and way to sexy for the Mad Hatter, one look in them beautiful eyes and its a rap, signature move sealing their victory would be to look them in the eyes as she slipped them a rufie, and than the mad hatter would wake up the sore. Madder hatter.
What got you started in stand up comedy?
I love to laugh but even more so I love to make people laugh.
Who are your biggest inspirations in comedy?
That would be Bernie Mac, Carlos Mencia and George Lopez
How long have you been doing comedy?
I have been very lucky and blessed, I have been doing it for 9 months. It will be one year in febuary of 2014
Who has been the biggest help for you in your comedy career?
I would have to say Keith Stubbs (owner of Wiseguys) and comic Brandon T. Jackson
What is your favorite kind of show to perform on? Bar show, Musical event, Comedy Club, etc.? Why?
Comedy club. Cuz of the whole expectation of the place you go to have a good time, let all your stress from your everyday life be forgotten and just laugh.
What is the best way to make money as a comedian?
Network. Know your city/state, get youself out their and work, work, work. To sell yourself, you have to show the people what you can do and when you get the chance you have to just blow their minds, the more minds you blow, the more money you make.
What is your advice on how to handle a rough crowd or a heckler?
I love some smart ass in the crowd , just remember they came to see you. The biggest thing never forget you have the mic. Just know your stuff be confident and own the stage, the rest will all fall into place, and if it doesn’t that day, so what! Learn from it and write a joke about it.
You have started to break into the Las Vegas comedy scene, give us some details about that experience? What shows do you have coming up there?
LV is great, I did a couple shows at the Sapphire Comedy Club and it was great. First off it’s Vegas and people always are fun in LV. The people are all great and Philip Peredo is a good guy to have in your corner in LV. I just talked to the Rivera and I’m going to be going back to LV and doing some shows their before the end of the year.

Brandon T Jackson and Rion Evans
What was one joke that you have told that has stood out the most?
A bit I do about a blow job.
What do you think of the local comedy scene? Good and bad?
I think that there is plenty of work out there here in Utah if you work hard and go for it. The bad, its such a small state that some times comics miss out if they are not on the in crowd list. I know some great comics that should have been on stage before some others, but weren’t because of networking.
What would make it better?
If more comics just supported each other more. I remember when I first started, one night I had a bad night and was down on myself. A friend and great comic, Jay Whittaker, pulled me aside and kept it 100 and told me the good and the bad of the set and to keep on the grind and that everone has a set like that in their life at one time or another. It was the fact that he took the time, and that little bit of great advice helped me become better and better today.
Who are some of your favorite new local comics?
What shows do you have coming up?
Well this Saturday I am doing a charity show at the 5 Monkeys to help raise money for a little boy with leukemia, and than next Saturday I am hosting a show at Club One for the WBU Welterweight champion of the world. Chris “Kid Kayo” Fernandez. I have another on the 16th the day after, also I will be doing a show next month at the 19th Hole and off to LV to the Rivera.

I have to give B-Real props. After reading that interview and my on again of again comedy career I have say thank you for keeping it real with me. When opportunity come and knock don’t answer the door. Tear that motha down and use that damn door as a surfboard on this wave that we call life.
